For initial certification in the U.S. Virgin Islands, all candidates must:

  • Have a minimum of a bachelor's degree from an accredited and/or approved institution
  • Submit an online Professional Staff Certification application VIBOE Teacher Certification | Home (myviboe.com)
  • Pay the non-refundable $25 application fee
  • Have their accredited and/or approved institution(s) send us official transcript(s)
  • Demonstrate proof of U.S. citizenship, permanent residency, or other approved work status
  • Complete a course in Virgin Islands history within their first year of employment *
  • Pass the Praxis® tests for their certification area **

*Applies only to school-based professionals appointed to the Virgin Islands public school system AFTER the 1991-1992 school year
**Applies only to secondary school and elementary content area teachers

For recertification, all candidates must:

  • Submit an online Professional Staff Certification application VIBOE Teacher Certification | Home (myviboe.com)
  • Pay the non-refundable $25 application fee
  • Submit proof of having completed a minimum of 125 contact hours of professional development during the certificate period

NOTE:  each certificate of attendance must include the candidate’s name, the date of professional development and total contact hours. Credit for courses completed at an accredited college or university may be considered towards the professional development requirement (15 hours for each credit). The school must send an official transcript to the VIBE for review.
