How do I renew my professional educator certification?

When you possess the Professional Educator Certificate, you must complete 125 hours of professional development and/or course work every five years to keep this certificate valid. Applicable courses taken at an accredited university are granted 15 hours for each credit completed. The applicant is responsible for submitting his/her certificate of completion indicating the number of contact hours or a transcript indicating the credit hours and course(s) completed. 

Administrator/Supervisor Professionals

Applicant must in addition to the requirements for the Elementary or Secondary Education Educator: 

  • Have earned a minimum of a Master of Arts degree with 30 semester credit hours in Administration/Supervision 
  • Have taken the School Leaders Licensure Assessment, Praxis II, Test Code 6011 with a passing score of 156 or better  
  • Have successfully taken two Special Education Courses (required for Administrators)  

Secondary Education Educator

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in the subject area to be taught with a minimum of 30 credits and 26 professional education credits (Foundations of Education, Educational Psychology, Classroom Management/Student Teaching, Curriculum and Methods, Educational Technology, Introduction to Special Education, and History of the Virgin Islands 
  • A minimum of 42 semester credit hours in 5 of the 6 general academic areas (English, Natural Science, Mathematics, Social Studies, Foreign Language and Fine Arts)  

Elementary Education Educator

  •  A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in elementary education or early childhood education with a minimum of 36 professional education credits (Foundations of Education, Educational Psychology, Classroom Management/Student Teaching, Curriculum and Methods, Educational Technology, Introduction to Special Education, and History of the Virgin Islands 
  • A minimum of 42 semester credit hours in 5 of the 6 general academic areas (English, Natural Science, Mathematics, Social Studies, Foreign Language and Fine Arts) 

Conditional Certificate

An applicant can qualify for Conditional Certificate in order to be employed as a U. S. Virgin Islands Educator. However, this certificate only allows you to be eligible to work for a certain period of time.

How do I apply to be certified as a professional educator?

The Virgin Islands Board of Education is mandated by law to certify and to have highly qualified elementary and secondary school teachers in every classroom in the US Virgin Islands. In order to fulfill these mandates, there are certain requirements needed for each level of certification.

How do I apply for the Territorial Scholarship Program?

The Territorial Scholarship Loan/Grant program is administered by the Virgin Islands Board of Education.  Students are awarded with loans and/or grants.  All loans payments begin one (1) year after graduation at an interest rate of 6% and a 2% delinquency rate. Apply.
